And after careful consideration, I've decided to suspend my beauty coverage here indefinitely. Between taking care of my almost-five-month-old daughter, juggling magazine assignments, and working on a book, suffice it to say I'm swamped. I've really appreciated your loyalty over the past two years, and I hope that you'll continue to read my work in upcoming glossies (Women's Health, Prevention, and Vanity Fair on the way!). The normally colorful Marc Jacobs was inspired by a far more neutral palette while designing his fall collection, which was revealed last night at the Lexington Avenue Armory; Subtle, ladylike dresses and suits featuring longer hemlines and classic tweeds and boucle, floated down the cardboard box-covered runway. To complement the understated tones of grey and beige, Jacobs tapped CND manicurists Roxanne Valinoti and Elisa Ferri to create five shades of polish—ranging from a rich, mousy gray to a soft, lavender-tinged cream. Here's the recipe to my favorite concoction (at left), but if you don't fancy yourself a mix master, you can alwaysbuy ready-made "greiges" like Essie best-sellers in Mink Muff and Chin-Chilly.

My bathroom seems to be heavily populated by imported items of late—many of them from Australia. Considering that the natives there know a thing or two about beauty (see Naomi Watts, Gemma Ward, and Cate Blanchett), I've decided to devote this post to my favorite acquisitions from the land down under.

1. Bloom Cosmetics ' silky eye shadows (above left) glide effortlessly onto lids without creasing, thanks to natural ingredients that include essential oils and botanicals. New, spring shades—Antique Gold, Platinum, and Pistachio—intensify brown, blue, and hazel eyes, respectively. Plus, I adore the quirky, playful packaging (think the Aussie version Benefit).

2. I've had the pleasure of interviewing Poppy King, creator of Lipstick Queen, on several occasions over the years, and her innovative lip products are as witty and vibrant as she. Oxymoron gloss, for example, offers those with clumsier fingers a foolproof way to get rich, matte lips—and a tiny dab on cheeks gives them a beautiful, creamy flush.

3. Speaking of having a sense of humor, makeup artist Napoleon Perdis always seems to have fun with his eponymous collection. My recent addiction is his Peep Show Madame Beyond mascara, which lengthens and volumizes fringe to give them sweeping, velvet curtain-like effects.

4. Remember those 90s infomercials for Nad's wax? The company, which literally began out of founder Sue Ismiel's kitchen, has certainly evolved over the years. My pick? The Large Body Wax Strips. They're neat, double-sided, ready-to-use, and quickly smooth legs—with results lasting up to four weeks.

5. Need a break from the "Ballet Slippers" and "Mademoiselles "of the nail polish world? Try Miss Frou Frou, an indie range that offers punchy, on-trend hues like tropicana orange and pea green—perfect for a summer pedicure.

"To be honest, I opened the space because of its location," says Jan Phillips, a Brooklyn mother and owner of Henry Street Pilates in Cobble Hill. "It's right near my house!" The former ballerina, who logged in 700 hours of training with Romana Kryzanowska (Joseph Pilates' successor) before receiving her certification, transformed a vacated laundromat into a veritable Pilates paradise, complete with seven Towers, last summer in record time (just six weeks), and since September, has drawn a steady stream of in-the-know neighborhood clients. "I've had to hire two new instructors already, we've been so busy," she says. Her focus on classical Pilates, as its creator intended, involves a series of short exercises on an elevated mat connected to springs, bars, and handles that "allow you to move the body in any number of directions...up and down, in and out, back to front, side to side," says Phillips. "Think of a trapeze act without the Spandex and altitude." And, thanks to small, intimate classes, plus several sessions throughout the day, patrons receive plenty of individual attention for a fraction of the cost of private lessons. Cult Fragrance Watch

When both L'Oréal and Parisian concept store Colette acquire a new fragrance, the entire beauty world sits up and takes notice. This month, Martin Margiela, the elusive Belgian designer whose fashion chops include stints with Jean Paul Gaultier and Hermès, reveals his first scent—with some very strong backing. In keeping with Margiela's discreet, blank canvas ethos, the unisex juice—called, simply, "Untitled" (with not a hint of irony)—is a crisp, clean, green, infused with notes of exotic ferns and incense. Co-created by perfumer Daniela Andrier (la nez behind such olfactory blockbusters as Gucci by Gucci and Opium), it took two years to perfect, and according to the company, "can be worn by anyone, anywhere." Though we have a suspicious feeling this haute eau will be appearing on fashion insiders exclusivement, for the time being.

New Year, New Face

After a three year relationship, Angelina Jolie and St. John have parted ways. The luxury knitwear company, which first tapped the edgy actress to toughen up their soccer mom image, is apparently ready to evolve, according to CEO Glenn McMahon, who told WWD that Jolie "overshadowed the brand." Um, you think? In an effort to shift our attention back to their product, St. John has hired model Karen Elson (quirky wife of White Stripes lead man) as the new face instead. Not sure the Titian-haired lovely will be any less distracting, but you can decide for yourself when ads roll out in February glossies like Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue.

London's iconic Liberty & Co. department store first made its signature, floral-printed fabric a must-have of the English rose, garden-party set decades ago, and the sophisticated, feminine pattern has since decorated everything from Nike kicks to Bonpoint baby clothes. This spring, makeup giant M.A.C celebrates the preppy designs popularized by the famous Tudor mansion/posh shop with a new "Give Me Liberty" color range. The homage—which will include limited edition nail polish, lip gloss, shadows, and even a scarf in cheery, girly hues—features playful packaging with a kitschy, Alice-in-Wonderland vibe. Thinking of tying the knot this year, or even just shacking up? Better watch your waistline. New research from the University of Queensland in Australia, published this month in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, has found that women living with a partner put on more pounds than those who live solo—even when childless. According to the study, which followed over 6,000 Aussie women aged 18 to 23 over the course of a decade, the 10-year weight gain for a women with a baby and a mate was 20 lbs, 15 for those married without kids, and only 11 for those living alone without children. The factors that trigger the weight gain were attributed to altered behavior as opposed to metabolic changes, including a more active social life such as frequent dinners out. A publicist recently sent me a teeny, tiny vial of the latest beauty elixir to join cult ranking—Rodin Olio Lusso Face Oil —which I vowed not to dip into until the most brutally cold day arrived in New York. Well, I think the past week qualifies. I've been using this precious, aromatic oil (composed of 11 essential botanical juices, including fragrant Indian jasmine and Moroccan argan) since temps dropped below freezing a few days ago, and my complexion has reaped the rewards, remaining smooth and, rather shockingly, glowy in spite of furiously chafing winds. With the FDA-approval of Latisse, the prescription eyelash lengthener, early last year, mass market beauty companies have been racing to create their own OTC versions. Jan Marini (who stirred an industry-wide maelstrom when she formulated the now-defunct Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner years ago using bimatroprost, the same active ingredient in Latisse) has a new non-RX product, Marini Lash, which relies on peptides to boost the volume and thickness of lashes. I've never much cared for my nose. I always thought it was too long, too hooked, too ethnic, too...much. My unsubtle profile was a particular source of insecurity growing up. In high school, I made myself an expert at concealing it—or, at the very least, downplaying it—by carefully positioning myself while sitting next to crushes in Biology and English, and eventually, boyfriends at the movies. Who knew when there might be a casual sideways glance cast in my direction? As a college student, I inexplicably, and rather impulsively, decided to embellish it with a nose ring. Perhaps that was an attempt to embrace its Indian-ness. The diamond stud suited me at the time—and everyone else seemed to like it. It became my thing. A sort of safety net. Like a tweedy Chanel bag zhuj-zing up a so-so outfit. Later, an acquaintance I met in Spain (and eventually lost touch with) told me my nose was "cute." I didn't believe her, but I never forgot the compliment. Then a funny thing happened. I had a little girl. The day she was born, I looked at her tiny face for the first time, and I saw my very own nose from another angle. It was the same curve, same length, same pointed tip—on another, little person. So teeny, so proportionate, and finally, I realized, so perfect.

My daughter's recent arrival has naturally flipped my life upside down. Showers are now franticly squeezed in during nap time, and professional blowouts are a distant memory. Still, I haven't given up on myself completely. Here, a list of products that have helped me feel presentable throughout the first month of motherhood. Use them if you've got a new baby, a new job, new boyfriend, or anything else robbing you of precious beauty sleep.

Pregnant Pause

With my baby's due date around the corner (!), the doctor has advised me to "pack my bags." In addition to the (hopefully) mood-boosting nursing gowns and adorable baby Ralph Lauren kimono set (thanks, Aunty Cindy!), here's what I'm taking with me.

Taking a cue from NYFW's sumo-inspired hair (see Thakoon and Marc Jacobs ) the Gossip Girl star wore a slicked back, super-long braided pony. Unfortunately, the real life translation was more WWF than glam geisha. Though we'll give Lively extra credit for braving a hot-off-the-runway trend, she should have stuck to her signature So-Cal waves and let the daring dress steal the show, no?

Those who know me are quite familiar with my obsession with paislies (the gorgeous swirling patterns adorn everything from my rugs to my stationery, at right). Amid the backstage whir at fashion week, NYC manicurist and spa owner Jin Soon Choi—hunched over in tight quarters, dressed in head-to-toe black, diligently focused on her work—almost seems to disappear. Yet the nails she steadily and quietly decorates (at Derek Lam, Oscar de La Renta, and Vivienne Tam, to name a few) have had a major editorial impact, and beauty giant M.A.C has taken notice. This month, the company teams up with Choi to debut her first collection of six, runway-inspired polishes. “They’re a direct translation of what we see at the shows,” Choi says. “I even used Beyond Jealous, a charcoaled bluish green, on the models at Doo. So, naturally, I received the news that Avril Lavigne was joining in on the "celebrity" perfume action with a healthy dose of skepticism. But yesterday, at the launch party for her first scent, Black Star, (available this week at Kohls), I was genuinely surprised. A girly heart note of pink hibiscus is topped with juicy black plum, while a deep, nearly edible dark chocolate accord rounds out the bottom. The resulting combination is unexpectedly feminine, wearable, and addictive—proving the punk princess can still produce more hits than misses.

Certain grooming necessities—lacking in aesthetics—have long jockeyed for space in the corners of our medicine cabinets while their more attractive rivals stake claim up front. Until now. “Makeup is crucial in completing a woman’s look,” says Domenico Dolce, one half of the sensational designing duo, Dolce & Gabbana. “It’s considered a female rite,” Stefano Gabbana, his partner of over two decades, chimes in. And, so, the Milan-based fashionistos created Dolce & Gabbana The Make Up, an extensive collection that includes all the trappings of a smoldering Italian screen siren: Vespa-red lip gloss, inky black eyeliner, smoky shadow quads, and 24-karat bronzing powder. “We wanted to give women the elements that make applying makeup magical, almost theatric,” Gabbana says. “It’s that moment she’s in front of the mirror getting made up, leaving us spellbound watching.”
A true labor of love, the line took years to formulate. “As with everything we do, we sought perfection,” Dolce says. “There was an extreme attention to detail, from quality to packaging.” Sizzling, femme fatale touches—think sleek, gilded compacts and lipstick bullets that click shut—conjure images of Sophia Loren-like goddesses sauntering across the room in sky-high stilettos. Little wonder, then, that the pair selected modern-day bombshell Scarlett Johansson to be the face of the collection. “The quintessential Dolce & Gabbana girl is strong and beautiful,” says makeup artist Pat McGrath, who collaborated with the designers on The Make Up. In the spirit of change, Michelle O. gave beauty editors a thrill when she appeared at last week's White House Summer Music series showing off a fringed crop (at left). But, despite the subsequent media hype, it turns out the First Lady didn't actually go short. According to her mane man Johnny Wright, Obama simply tucked all of her hair underneath a ponytail, creating the illusion of a bob so convincing, it prompted her deputy press secretary, Semonti Mustaphi, to go on the record to clarify the transformation. To recreate the look, pull strands back into a loose, low pony. Curl ends under, and use bobbi pins to secure them along the nape.

Among my many guilty pleasures is flipping through tabloids to rip off casual celebrity style. (What to wear to yoga? See Gwyneth Paltrow’s Stella McCartney for Adidas blousy top and leggings ensemble. How about a low-key Friday night at the movies? Try Vanessa Hudgens's cardi-wrap and cuffed skinny jeans combo.) My preoccupation with looking photo-ready (or at the very least, downtown cool and naturally glamorous) extends to beauty as well. So on a recent long-haul flight, I decided to put in a little celebrity-inspired effort with some carefully packed products that would ensure a glowing arrival. The night before take-off, I bought six, stackable clear pill cases , and filled them with a dollop of super-rich moisturizer, eye cream, lip balm, liquid foundation, liquid blush, and concealer, respectively. The tiny tubs breezed right through security and remained safe in my carry-on until I pulled them out to freshen up before landing. In fact, I ended up loving the convenient, customized stash of my favorites so much, they've since made a daily appearance in my handbag for on-the-run primping.

Last week, a beauty savvy friend of mine mentioned that she had an appointment at Ebenezar Eyelash , a hidden, fourth floor Korea Town salon devoted entirely to lash extensions. Then, on Sunday, while reading The New York Times Style section, I came across an article recommending the space as well. Now, while I happen to remain a Shu Uemura/Soul Lee loyalist on the subject of false, semi-permanent fringe, I will always appreciate and share good find. At Ebenezar's, experts attach individual strands right to your lashline, so they look lush and natural (see image, above right), not reminiscent of a Bellagio waitress. Unlike drugstore strips, they last several weeks (as long as you follow care instructions), and completely eliminate the need for eyeliner or mascara. And, for around $100 (significantly cheaper than high-end salons), you'll have enough leftover for spicy Korean barbeque afterwards.

The surprise hit at my traditional Indian wedding wasn't my husband's ceremonious arrival on a decorated white horse, but rather the gold and silver bindis I included on a tray in the restrooms. While in Harbour Island over the weekend, I had a chance to visit the Sugar Mill Trading Company, India Hicks' and Linda Griffin's jewel-box of a boutique along the bay. Two of my famously poreless editor friends have been raving about Aida Bicaj for years, so when I was offered an opportunity to experience her complexion-boosting handiwork myself, I couldn’t refuse. Last Friday, I visited the New York City facialist’s Institute de Beauté spa, tucked away on a tree-lined corner of 75th and Park. The intimate space has only one treatment room, allowing for plenty of attention and—a real scarcity in Manhattan—genuine real quiet. As I zoned out to Bicaj’s selection of Bossa Nova tunes, she began my “Manual Lift,” which involved cleansing, intense stimulation (including a depuffing orbital massage), lactic acid exfoliation, and a super silky oxygen mask, with products by French skincare company Biologique Recherche (above right). While I waited for the ingredients to work their magic, Bicaj worked hers, giving me a peppermint-infused foot massage that made my tension disappear as quickly as my blackheads. Just in case, I packed a makeup bag with foundation and concealer to camoflauge the typical post-facial damage. As it turns out, I didn’t need to. I left the spa with honest-to-goodness clear skin, and a new addiction.

This year's Costume Institute Gala, themed "The Model as Muse," celebrates nearly a century's worth of legendary beauties—from Dovima (above left) and Jerry Hall, to "Trinity" members Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington, to new-school glamazons like Kate Moss, Gisele, and Agyness Deyn—as seen through the eyes of the world's greatest photographers and designers. This week, the FDA approved cosmetic use of Reloxin, the first competitor to Botox to land Stateside. Already popular in Europe, where it is marketed as Dysport, the botulinum toxin derivative works just like its predecessor to inhibit muscle contractions associated with wrinkles. The difference? According to clinical trials, Reloxin spreads more quickly than Botox (yielding even faster results), and lasts up to six months (versus four). Though cost per dose is still being determined (Botox is roughly $350 per area), Reloxin could be a wiser, recession-conscious investment.

Years ago, while working on a client, makeup artist Khuraira discovered an unexpected tool to conceal dark undereye circles—coral lipstick. The orange undertone seemed to imperceptibly mask stubborn purple shadows. So when the former assistant to Laura Mercier eventually decided to launch her own self-named cosmetics company, she made sure to include a product that would recreate the results. Though it could be easily mistaken for a cream blush or lip stain, Khuraira Age-Control Dark Circle Primer (at right) is actually meant to be used underneath concealer to camouflage skin discolorations (including bruises or tattoos).
